Everything in the curriculum has to deliver all three. No exceptions.
Well trained and well behaved.
Most methods stop here. Not ours.
There are very ugly ways to stop a behaviour, like using force. And very fun ways, like using lots of bribes. Either way, the behaviour stops.
But stopping a behaviour is not the same as solving one. If rule two and rule three haven't been met as well, you haven't solved anything. You've managed it.
So don't focus on stopping a behaviour. Focus on solving it. That's what the Whole Dog Approach is.
No more frustration, arousal or stress underneath. Fixed, not managed.
Issues don't come back and new ones don't pop up, because you now know what they need to stay okay.
If something doesn't meet all 3 of these rules, it's not part of the curriculum.We don't do it.
Yet you're still told to just teach the dog how to behave.

Weirdly, it's because of my mum.
My mum raised me on advice most parents would never give: question everything.
Obsessed with techniques, food, toys. Finding ways to motivate dogs that weren't interested. And don't get me wrong: training works.
I wasn't working with dog trainers. I was working with dog owners. People who don't want to spend hours every week training just to keep life on track. I didn't want that life either.
So I asked: why should owning a dog feel like a constant project?
If you only train behaviours, you're fighting symptoms. If you understand why the behaviours exist, you change the dog that's creating them.

2019. I'm on holiday, volunteering at a rescue centre, and I meet Enzo. Found on the streets. Over a year in the rescue. And because I've got no impulse control, two months later he landed at Heathrow Airport.
He was three years old and he'd never had an owner. Hyperactive. Obsessive. Unruly. The least domesticated dog I'd ever met. Every squirrel, every smell, every hole drove him nuts.
And here's the thing: I was a dog trainer. And training was at the bottom of my list. Because dogs like that are like it for a reason, and training doesn't touch the reason.
What changed him were the things I learned when I crossed into the behaviourist side of dog training. The outlet his breed was built for. The needs nobody talks about. The moment he got them, the frustration started to go. Week by week: more predictable, more restful, more trainable. And then all the recall training finally worked.
Dogs run up to him now, and he couldn't care less. He recalls off deer. Same dog. And he was three when I got him. So no: your dog is not too old, and they're not broken.
