Week 5: Hyperactivity | MK9Plus
Week 5 · Hyperactivity 🔥

Your dog isn't full of beans. Your dog is on fire. And doing more is petrol

The pulling, the jumping, the stealing, the hit and miss days. It is not an energy problem, and this lesson shows you what it actually is.

Tired of firefighting every single day?

Managing, calming, walking further, trying harder. There is a version of life where none of that is needed, and it is exactly what we build inside MK9Plus.

Stop managing the flames. Fix what's lighting them

Not just video lessons. 1-to-1 email support directly with me, weekly lives, Zoom calls, and a full system to diagnose what is really driving your dog.

The lesson, laid out

Sound like your house? 💥

Hyperactivity is not one problem. It is the adrenaline behind a dozen of them, and it makes every day a coin flip.

🔥 Pulling on the lead 🔥 Super jumpy 🔥 Stealing things 🔥 Hit and miss recall 🔥 Never settling 🔥 Unpredictable days
"Adrenaline through the body creates a dog that is not consistent and not predictable. Hard to live with, hard to train, hard to predict." Max Randall · MK9Plus

The battery myth 🔋

The story we have all been told: the battery is full, so drain it. More walks, more fetch, more everything, until the dog finally sleeps.

✗ The myth

"The battery is too full"

Do more, drain the battery, get the sleepy dog. Except you have tried that. And the dog that comes home from the massive walk is somehow more wired than before.

✓ The reality

The dial that's actually broken: arousal

🔥

Most of the time you are already meeting your dog's needs. The battery is fine. The problem is arousal, and the more you do, the higher it climbs.

Arousal, explained with a cold shower 🚿

Jump in an icy shower right now and you will not come out saying "ooh, lovely". You come out buzzing. That spike is arousal: adrenaline, norepinephrine and dopamine.

⚡ Adrenaline ⚡ Norepinephrine ⚡ Dopamine

🥶 Every exciting thing is a cold shower

Leaving the house. Another dog appearing. A squirrel. For an aroused dog, stepping outside the front door is jumping straight into icy water, every single time.

😱 And so is every scary thing

Arousal does not care whether the trigger is brilliant or frightening. Both send it climbing. It does not matter if the battery is empty, half full or full. High arousal brings every problem with it.

"The more we do, the more aroused the dog becomes. So the goal is not just to drop arousal. It is to keep it dropped, for the rest of their life." Max Randall · MK9Plus
Your training this week

The art of doing nothing

It does not look like much of a training video. It is one of the most effective things you will ever do. This is desensitisation: turning the cold shower into just... water.

Sit down mid-walk. Say nothing Let them watch the cars, people and smells No acting on impulses, just processing Outside stops being an explosion

Sprinkle in a chew or scatter some food to help arousal drop. Then slowly make the sessions longer, and braver: doing nothing at the end of a walk is easy, at the start is the real exam.

🎁 Your bonus training video

Note: this clip is part of a full 35 minute lesson on MK9Plus, all about hyperactivity on walks.

But here's the problem

You can't train calmness into a dog whose life is winding them up

"Teach the dog to settle. Sit and stay. Train calm." You have heard it before. It can work. But what if the dog is frustrated every day? Stressed? Anxious?

🔨 What you've been doing

Chews every day, licking, finding, calming, managing. All good tools. But if the state underneath stays, you are pushing heads down forever. That is the whole rest of your life, planned out.

🎯 What actually needs fixing

The state your dog is constantly in. A frustrated dog does everything at 110%. They arouse themselves, every walk, every day, no matter what you counter it with.

"Training manages the behaviour. It doesn't solve the problem, which is the state the dog is in." Max Randall · MK9Plus

And now... everything goes quiet

The state comes from the life the dog is living. Change the life slightly, and the state changes. Change the state, and the behaviour follows. No extra training required.

The life they live The state they're in Everything you see

Fix the first box and the other two fix themselves. And the key to the whole thing, the single biggest lever for hyperactivity, is this:

🌙 z z z
18–20 hoursof sleep, every day

That is what your dog should be getting, and it is far easier to reach than you think. The more they sleep, the more arousal drops. A dog that is okay sleeps more. And a dog that sleeps can dig, sniff and bark at squirrels all day... then come home and simply reset.

"There's no need to train them, manage them, tell them off. Nothing. That is the key to that life. It's just changing the one you're living right now, slightly." Max Randall · MK9Plus
The invitation from the video

If this is more than a training issue, come and fix it properly

Problems always seem huge when you are not working on them. Maybe this whole time you have been managing the behaviour, feeling like it is complicated. It is not. This is just what your dog has needed since the day you got them.
